Major League Sports Roll Back On Random Testing For Marijuana in 2020-2021 Season

Good news for professional athletes! Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, professional sport leagues are easing up on marijuana testing and penalties for usage. Most notably, the NBA has reached an agreement to temporarily stop randomly testing players, who are normally subjected to four every season with monetary fines for positive results. “Due to the unusual circumstances in conjunction with the pandemic, we have agreed with the NBPA to suspend random testing for marijuana for the 2020-21 season,” league spokesperson Mike Bass said in a statement, “And focus our random testing program on performance-enhancing products and drugs of abuse.” While marijuana will still remain on the banned substance list for the NBA, Major League baseball has removed it from theirs to focus on opioid abuse. The NFL has limited testing to training camp only, while the NHL still requires random drug tests, but doesn’t punish players for testing positive.
